Library Cards
How can I get a card?

  • You must live in our district.
Some people who live in Mundelein actually pay their library taxes to Cook Memorial Public Library District in Libertyville, and must get their cards from that library. Please call the library to find out if your address is in the Fremont Public Library District, or check our What District Am I In? page. Please note that our district contains portions of other villages including Wauconda, Round Lake Beach, Hawthorn Woods, Libertyville, and Grayslake.
  • You must fill out an application.
A free card is issued to any FPLD resident who presents two forms of valid identification proving residency within the district, one of which includes a photograph. Forms of ID that are acceptable include:
    • Driver's license
    • State of Illinois Identification card
    • Utility bill
    • Rental agreement
    • Checkbook with printed address
    • Property title or mortgage
  • Children of any age are eligible for a library card.
If the child is under age 16, the custodial parent or legal guardian is required to sign his/her child's library card application and provide identification of address.

Checking out materials

You must have a library card in order to check out materials. A valid Illinois driver’s license or State ID may also be registered with the Library as a substitute library card which can only be used to check out materials. This registration can be done at the Public Service desk, and the cardholder must present both library card and driver's license/State ID at registration time.

All cards will expire every three years. After expiration, you will need to show proof of residency to reactivate the card.

What happens if I lose my card?

  • Additional replacement cards will be issued for a fee of $2.00 per card.

Reserves

Any cardholder may reserve (be put on a waiting list for) any library item which is currently checked out to someone else. (Exception: Items from the BestSeller collection may not be reserved.)

Reserves may be placed in person or by telephone (please have your library card handy). You may also place holds online through our website. When placing the hold, your username is the barcode on the back of your library card and the default password is the word PATRON. (Remember to change your password for better security. Please contact the library if you need assistance.)

Through our online catalog system, you may check the availability of holds online, renew items, and cancel holds as well. Contact the library for further information about using our catalog online.

No item may be reserved by or for a specific date.

Once a cardholder has been contacted regarding the availability of a reserved item, that item will be held for seven (7) days. Cardholders are contacted by telephone, unless they are registered for e-mail notifications.

If a cardholder has forgotten his/her library card, but would like their chosen materials to be held while retrieving the card, such items will be held for the cardholder for three (3) days.
